Title: Web Slices
Post by: Macknairb on November 20, 2009, 10:30:38 PM
Hi,

I am trying to incorporate a webslice from theweathernetwork.com into the screen, but it doesnt display properly.

Has anyone tried to do something like this? If so, were you able to make it work and are you willing to let me know what to do?

Thanks,

-Brian

Brian, this is very effective with magicinfopro. I use BBC website, however the one you use is fine too. You can publish a webpage and pan to a certain area. There are offsets parameters that you can set when you create a web frame. I use Offset Left -200 and Offset Top -200 and set the appropriate width and height and I get the BBC iPlayer (ie BBC 24-hour news). The same can be done with the weather.

I find that this is one of the best ways to use magicinfo pro.

Thanks for the reply Bill,

I have created a web spot on the screen, but the window handles show on the screen. How do I eliminate those?

Thanks again,

-Brian

Brian, there are some parameters that you can set and that includes to get rid off the scroll bars - if  that is what you mean. Check on the right hands side, click on the Web Frame, Screen and then select the Scroll to Off. And that's it!

Thank you Bill!

It works well. I just used the actual web page and had it refresh every 15 minutes.

Thanks for your help.

Is there an easy way to configure the offset for a page or is trial and error the only way?

I am afraid it is trial and error thing...

I put the offsets to where they look good while creating the screen, but when I preview the screen (tools, preview screen) things are cut off or look wrong. Is the preview inside the screen creation not accurate? I have zoom set to 100%

i think i may have figured out the problem- my laptop is a 1024x768 screen and my plasma is 1366x768?

A brief word of caution when using web content and RSS feeds in digital signage. BBC/CBC/ACCUWEATHER RSS and web content is subject to terms of use that are pretty murky when it comes to terms of use for digital signage. All of the sources however agree that they prohibit ANY "indirect commercialization' of content. One of my customers inquired with  lawyer, and the answer was basically 'the low cost of licenced content is worth the peace of mind'. see the post HERE: http://www.tetraddigitalsignage.com/2009/11/news-update.html

2.3   YOU MAY NOT DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY CHARGE USERS SPECIFICALLY FOR ACCESSING BBC CONTENT OR OTHERWISE COMMERCIALISE SUCH CONTENT, NOR ATTEMPT TO RE-SELL THE BBC CONTENT IN ANY WAY.
2.4   Where possible you must create a functional link back to the BBC webpage summarised by the BBC Content . If you are displaying the BBC Feed where a functional link back to the BBC is not possible, you must display on-screen the URL from which the BBC Content can be obtained (scroll down to the accreditation section below.) You may not directly or indirectly change, edit, add to or produce summaries of the BBC Content or any content on the BBC website nor place any full-story BBC content in an HTML frame-set.

BBC's RSS T&C's as may apply to digital signage: http://www.bbc.co.uk/feedfactory/terms.shtml  (Note similar exist for all other web conent)

I'm trying to do something similar with a weather display but when I use the "offset bottom" the page does not move. I've tried with and without the scroll bars on.

As an example if I try to add a web area with this page http://www.weather.com/weather/today/USFL0372

I can't get the bottom off set to push the page up and cut off everything above the current conditions and forecast.
