Title: Cannot Install Magic Info I
Post by: p2master on November 25, 2009, 02:37:53 PM
Please advise:

I have installed PostgreSQL 8.3, and then the MII Server numerous times and it still will not connect. Am I missing a step?  Can someone point me in the direction of the installation manual?  Because I have tried everything to get this to work on two different computers.  It really shouldn't be this hard, but the services aren't starting up correctly and the database doesnt automatically connect so I know something is wrong here.  I also tried PostgreSQL 8.4 before this.  If anyone can help that'd be great.  Thanks in advance

I had a similar problem with starting the services and I've found a strange work around that might be worth trying.

on the server open up the services and scroll down to the PostgreSQL Database service.

Also goto Start, Programs, MagicInfo-I, Server and open configure MagicInfo-I server.

Now here comes the fun part.

Start the PostrgreSQL service and then impediantly Click start on the MagicInfo-I Service.  It may take a few trys but eventually I got the MagicInfo Service running.  I don;t know why this works and it's a pain as it needs to be done each time the server is restarted.

let me know how you get on.   :)

Thanks for the reply, I was starting to feel on and an island with this thing.

I tried what you said to no avail.  When I click start on the Magic Info I server config, nothing happens.  When I try to start it in the Services window, I get this error:

"Could not start the Magic Info I Server service on Local Computer   ERROR 1075: The dependency service does not exist or has been marked for deletion."

It looks like it's looking for a service called pgsql-8.3, which doesn't exist.  I have uninstalled everything, reinstalled, and tried on 3 different machines.  I am at a stand still here, anything else you could think of?  Has anyone else gotten this error?  Thanks

Adam

Have you installed PostgreSQL from the MagicInfo Install or downloaded it directly?

I only ask because I had a few issues until I installed it seperately.  There doesn't seem to be any proper linking going on between Post and magicinfo.  there should definately be a PostGreSQL service.  FYI Im running version 8.3 as well.  I'm also running MagicInfo-I version 1004.  I know ther are a few people running 1005 but after this issues I've had I'm not to sure about upgrading.

I downloaded PostgreSQL seperately.  I do have a service for it but it's called postgresql server8.3 not pgsql-8.3 or whatever it is looking for.  I'm stumped, I'd really like to get this working so I can test it, and I can't believe more people aren't having this issue.  Also I can't find any documentation on how to install PostgreSQL and test it properly.  Samsung just assumes you have it already and know how to use it.  I'm fed up with the lousy documentation.  I have the install manual, but that tells you virtually nothing about actually installing it.

postgres should come along with the installation package for the server, no need to go get it yourself.  Also it ought to work out of the box, no need to really mess with the configs.  And apache is installed as a service called "magicinfo".  Do be sure to check the firewall between the server and client machine though.

Thanks Scott,

Could you link me to the install that you used?  The one I used did not come with PostgreSQL.  It just assumes you have it installed

P.S. Firewall is disabled on both machines while testing.

What operating system are you installing it on?  I had a lot of trouble trying to get it installed on windows 2003 Server x64.  Just a thought.

Ok, heres an odd question are you running VMware on the same server you're trying to install MagicInfo-I on?  I only ask because they both use Tomcat6.exe and I've just attempted to install VMware on the same server and it won't start the service unless the MagicInfo service has been stopped.

I am shocked that no-one else is having any issues installing this.  I'm currently trying to install it on a different machine and still I'm getting silly problems.  Can't create postgres account, check password (postgres) or port or install path.

p2master I'm sorry I don't think there is anything else I can do to help.  If anything comes up I'll post on here. :'(

Ok, I've just done a completely new install on an XP (Sp3) machine.  Everything installed first time with no errors an seems to be fine, one thinsg that did occur to me was.  Can you access the Magic-Info login screen locally on the machine you installed it on by going to http://locahost:7001/MagicInfo (note that you need the capital letters in MagicInfo otherwise it won't work).

Let me know how you get on.

Sorry for the late reply.  Here is the server and client from Samsung's LFD site that i installed. http://www.samsunglfd.com/support/downloadlist.do

Server: http://www.mediafire.com/file/kmywjmtyiay/SetupServer_Standard_1006_0_091116_1410.exe
Client: http://www.mediafire.com/file/oztrcmqtw3t/SetupClient_Standard_v1006.0.exe

I just reinstalled it on a VM running XP and it seems to work fine

Yeah that's the same install I used, it doesn't install any version of PostgreSQL.  And no I can't log in to the MII server web address, nothing works.

So when I install PostgreSQL before MII, it doesn't work.  When I removed everything and tried just the server install I get this error:

"Check password of 'postgres' or port of database or install path of PostgreSQL"

The install won't continue after this point.  What a program.

Before installing try to remove everything related to MagicInfo-I first, which includes any version of postgres you have installed already.  confirm the removal through add/remove programs.

As a note if you ever were to upgrade the client software, be sure to uninstall it before putting the updated version on.  Otherwise you'll get errors that won't let you start.

Have you tried using something like CCleaner to flush out any remaining stuff in the registry.  It's worth a try.

Ill give it a shot, but I have tried installing this on 3 machines, so I doubt that'll help.

I've got version 1006 installed & working on a Windows 2003 server without a problem.

Does anyone know why it does not seem to work on a Windows 2008 server?

I'm running the install as Administrator and UAC is disabled. It looks like it installs okay and the web page opens fine, but when I try logging in with the default admin account I get a message "Incorrect ID or password."

Does anyone know whats wrong and how to fix it?

Regards

Steve

I just contacted Samsung Tech Support and discovered why I couldn't get the magic info to install.  Turns out you MUST install the prorgam in the default program location.  c:\MagicInfo-I.  I had been changing the default location to c:\program files\magicinfo-I and for some reason it would bypass installing the Java and the postgres database.  I explained to the tech guy that I consider this a bug and to report this issue to the programmers.  I hope this helps. It sure helpd me.

VERY helpful piece of information, thanks for letting us know. It's little things like this that can drive you mad when attempting to install a new piece of software. Hopefully Samsung will include it in new installation instructions.

Cheers mjlippert  ;D ;D ;D
